Fighting Giants: Respect

Respect is something all teens have a problem with. It can be respecting others or authorities. People like to brush off the increasing amount of disrespect among children as ‘just a phase’. While that may be true, it is still something that needs to be dealt with, how you treat someone can ultimately affect that person and yourself for a long time.

Sometimes I think that people forget that other’s have feelings too. Even though you may be ‘just joking’ words can hurt and leave and everlasting scar on one’s heart. Some might justify the way they treat others by using the excuse that they don’t like them, or that they are jerks anyway. If you don’t like a person, you still have no need to talk behind their backs, or treat them like their nothing. If you don’t like them, then just don’t talk to them! Don’t acknowledge them. They may have hurt you but that doesn’t mean you should stoop down to their level and hurt them back.

Authorities are just here to guide us. Even though what they might say  may make no sense at the time and sometimes their rules may indeed seem stupid, they just want to help.  Believe me, I know it’s not easy. No one likes being told what to do, but that is because our resistance to authority is embedded in us way farther than in just our DNA but   within our sinful nature. We criticize anybody that makes a decision we don’t like, we destroy their character, disrespect them, and we constantly try to belittle them.

Romans 13:1-3 says, “Everyone must submit to governing authorities. For all authority comes from God, and those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.”

In the Bible, it clearly states that God puts everyone in authority for a reason and that they themselves have been put their by God. So by disrespecting your authorities you are ultimately disrespecting God. Look at Samuel, when he thought the Israelites were rebuking him as their leader, God made it perfectly clear that they were not rebuking Samuel but God himself. (1 Samuel 8: 8-8) Also, If you can’t even respect the people God puts in charge how can you ever respect God?

News Flash: You Can’t .

By disrespecting and criticizing authorities you are ultimately accusing God of not making the right decisions and not having your well-being in mind when in reality he’s always been there for his people. He was there when he led the Israelites out of Egypt, and he’ll be there now.
